The Short Stack Ranch was founded by Therese Giannelli.  Therese grew up in the rural area in the foothills of Northern California.  Her early life involved the loving and caring of horses, dogs and cats as well as many sporting activities.

During her time in college she became aware of a program for athletes with intellectual disabilities, the Special Olympics. For the last 40 years and still today Therese works closely with the Northern California Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Therese’s dream has always been to find a way to join her love of animals and the individuals involved in Special Olympics.  Then in 2023 Therese had the opportunity to adopt two very special mini (miniature) horses, Kevin and Kenny.  Realizing this was her chance to make that dream come true.  Through her research Therese learned that mini horses were extraordinary animals to share with all individuals, especially those in need or in crisis. Additionally she has found them to have a special bond with the elderly adults and those with Dementia/Alzheimer.

With this knowledge Therese started to build her dream and created the Short Stack Ranch.  The first arrivals were Kenny and Kevin were eventually joined by the first two goats, Erica and Gabby. Erica was pregnant at the time and gave birth to four beautiful babies in September.  In honor of the Special Olympic Athletes who touched her heart Therese named all four after them, Jonathan Sparks, Ernie Roundtree, Valentina, and Bert.

Therese’s journey was met with tragedy in June of 2023 when her beloved Kevin suffered a severe accident that left him paralyzed for ten days. With the help and support of the incredible team at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Facility, who worked tirelessly to save him.  Against all odds, Kevin’s journey to recovery was documented along the way, inspired by a huge community of supporters.   After 59 days in the ICU, Kevin, the little fighter, came home and the rehabilitation process began.  Kevin's determination was extraordinary, regaining his ability to walk and he again was able to enjoy his life in the pasture.  His comeback was nothing short of courageous. Though Kevin has since passed, his legacy remains forever etched in the hearts of all that knew, loved and cared for him. He taught us the true meaning of resilience and love, and his story will continue to inspire everyone who hears it, just as the Special Olympic athletes have done for Therese.

During this time, Therese became aware of a herd of horses whose owner had passed away and were surrendered to animal control.  After hearing their plight, the ranch welcomed two of the mares, Sophia and Rose. While caring for Sophia and Rose Therese realized their herd had been separated and wanted to rejoin them. The ranch then adopted the two remaining mini horses, Jessie and Wyatt welcoming them with a heartwarming homecoming, completing the family.

It was Shortly afterwards that Therese learned of two donkeys who were on their way to a kill pen. Without hesitation the ranch rescued Baylee and Baxter and upon meeting them realized that their lack of care left them in terrible health. Baylee and Baxter were brought home to the ranch and with the initial care, their life changed and were able to join the other animals in the pasture.

Therese is dedicated to sharing the beauty of these incredible animals and helping those in need or crisis.  Some of the family of animals have been to memory care facilities, participated in Christmas Nativity plays, worked with children who had animal trauma, and have been shared with Special Olympic athletes, all to provide love and comfort.
